Voyages of Ocean Explorer

2005 - Georgian Bay's Bruce Peninsula

and the Thirty Thousand Islands

Introduction

In the summer of 2005, Donna, Ocean Explorer, and I departed our home port of Manitowoc, Wisconsin on Lake Michigan and headed for Lake Huron where we cruised the last major shoreline of the Great Lakes that we had not previously cruised - the east side of the Bruce Peninsula and the Thirty Thousand Island area of Ontario’s Georgian Bay.  While this area is a popular destination for Canadian boaters, it seems to be a less traveled area for boaters from the United States.  Whether it is the distance necessarily traveled to get there or the challenges of navigation through an unforgiving bottom that discourages US boaters is not clear to me, but I would certainly encourage more US boaters to give it a second look.  The area is very scenic with lots of bald granite and old-growth pine, and there are more anchorages than one can imagine.  The Canadians of this area, as has been our experience wherever we have visited in Canada, are most welcoming.  We enjoyed our experience very much and consider it to be one of the highlights of our Great Lakes cruising experience.
