Brooding Anemone - Epiactic Prolifera
This anemone may be prevalent on the coast but less so in the harbor. Pieces of kelp that float into the harbor bring many interesting hitchhikers with it. This one is no different. This anemone is often on the move and found in unusual places, including on the backs of a decorator crab. The back of a crab is a great place for an anemone because the crab will get the stinging protection from the anemone and the anemone will get a free ride to places where food is abundant. Knowing how a crab eats, there will be scraps of food floating around that the anemone will happily eat. When both animals benefit, it is describes as a mutualistic relationship.
