These animals are simultaneous hermaphrodites. As adults, they have both male and female sexual organs, at the same time. Self-fertilization is not known to occur however. There is a recent study suggesting that, during an ice age event, it may have become isolated, splitting off from a separate but closely related species, Diaulula odonoghuei.
